Setting up Kyocera Printers for PaperCut

Setting up your Kyocera printers for use with PaperCut is straightforward, especially if you use the recommended driver and settings. This guide will walk you through downloading the correct driver and configuring it for the best PaperCut experience, including optimal page counting, duplex tracking, and color detection.

Download the Kyocera KX Printer Driver

To get started, you'll want the latest Kyocera KX Printer Driver—not a basic or generic version. This driver provides enhanced features and full compatibility with PaperCut.

  1. Go to the official Kyocera download site:

  2. Search for your model:

    • Type the model in the search box.

  3. Select your operating system:

    • Choose your Windows version (Windows 10/11 64-bit is most common).

  4. Download the driver:

    • Choose the Standalone KX Print Driver package （latest Version available）

  5. Run the installer and follow the prompts to complete the driver installation for your printer.

Configure the Printer Driver for PaperCut

Once you’ve installed the driver, a few quick settings will ensure PaperCut works reliably with your Kyocera printer.

Set the PDL (Page Description Language) to PCL XL (PCL 6)

  1. Create your print queue using this driver.

  2. Go to Print Management on the server.

  3. Right-click your newly created print queue and select Properties.

  4. Go to the Ports tab

    • Uncheck Enable bidirectional support when the print queue is the HOLD queue and using a NUL port.

  5. Go to the Advanced tab.

    • Select Start printing after last page is spooled when the print queue is the HOLD queue and using a NUL port.

    • Uncheck Enable advanced printing features for all queues created.

      • Disabling this option improves the reliability of PaperCut's page counting, color detection, and duplex tracking.

    • Click the Print Processor button and confirm Print Processor is set to "WINPRINT", and Default Data Type is set to "RAW".

  1. Go to the Device Settings tab.

    • Find the PDL (Page Description Language) section/button and confirm PCL XL (sometimes labeled as PCL 6) is selected.

  2. Click Apply, then OK to save your changes.

For a smoother print experience and to match your organization’s policies, you can set some helpful defaults in Printing Preferences:

  • Duplex: Set to Long-edge (or your preferred default).

  • Color mode: Choose Color or Black & White as needed.

You can access these settings by right-clicking the printer, selecting Printing Preferences, and making your adjustments.

Test Your Setup

  1. After making these changes, print a test page.

  2. Confirm in PaperCut that the page count, color detection, and duplex detection are working as expected.
